Randy Shaw is the author of Beyond the Fields. He is also a longtime social change activist, founder and Clinic Director of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic in San Francisco. During the past nearly three decades Shaw has provided legal assistance to thousands of low-income tenants and drafted several laws that have preserved and improved affordable housing. Shaw won nationwide attention in 1982 when he uncovered San Francisco’s “heatless hotel” scandal, which led to emergency legislation ensuring adequate heat and hot water in the city’s single room occupancy hotels (SRO’s). A few years later he led the successful fight against the man known as “the world’s greatest slumlord,” bringing the landlord’s abuses to the attention of 60 Minutes and ultimately bringing down a multi-country real estate empire.

Since 1988, Shaw has designed and implemented some of the nation’s most innovative and successful housing programs for homeless single adults, and the THC is San Francisco’s leading provider of permanent housing to this population. Shaw is the author of The Activist's Handbook: A Primer (University of California Press, 2001) and Reclaiming America: Nike, Clean Air, and the New National Activism (University of California Press, 1999). His new book is Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century, is also published by UC Press. Shaw is also founder and editor of the daily progressive alternative online newspaper, Beyond Chron. He can be reached at randy@thclinic.org.
